An easy hike under the highest bridge in California, with swimming holes.

The Lake Clementine Trail leads families through the scenic American River canyon within Auburn State Recreation Area to the shores of Lake Clementine. Following the North Fork of the river, the route is relatively gentle but covers real distance, making it best suited to families with older kids who enjoy a longer walk. Along the way, popular swimming holes like Clark's Pool offer a refreshing dip, and the lake itself draws swimmers in warm months. Keep in mind there are no lifeguards on duty, and dogs are not permitted at Lake Clementine, though they're welcome on most other park trails. The combination of river views, canyon scenery, and cooling water makes it a rewarding summer outing. Free to access and open year-round, it's a classic taste of the foothills' wild beauty.
