An easy, stroller-friendly waterfall hike—wildflowers in spring.
The Black Hole of Calcutta Falls Trail is a short, family-friendly hike within Auburn State Recreation Area that rewards walkers with a roughly 40-foot seasonal waterfall. Following a section of the historic Western States Trail, the wide, mostly flat path runs a little over two miles round trip and ends at a wooden footbridge facing the falls, a lovely spot for photos and a rest. The waterfall is at its most impressive after good winter and spring rains, so timing the visit makes all the difference. The gentle terrain suits families with kids who can handle a couple of miles on foot. Free trailhead parking along Highway 49 fills quickly on weekends, so an early start helps. It's an accessible, scenic introduction to the canyon country surrounding Auburn.
