Hidden Falls: Auburn's Year-Round Cascade

Hidden Falls Regional Park sits in the rolling oak woodlands northwest of Auburn, and since opening to the public it has become one of Placer County's most beloved outdoor destinations. The park's namesake waterfall tumbles year-round, and a well-built network of trails and overlooks makes it friendly to families, trail runners, and equestrians alike.

The Trails

More than 30 miles of trail wind through the park, but most visitors come for the loop out to the falls overlook—a moderate few miles that drops through oak and bay woodland to a viewing platform above the cascade. Trails are shared by hikers, mountain bikers, and horses, and they are exceptionally well signed.

Reservations and Parking

Hidden Falls is popular enough that Placer County uses a parking reservation system on weekends and holidays during the busy season. When to Visit

The waterfall runs all year, but it is most dramatic from winter through late spring when seasonal creeks are full. Spring also brings wildflowers across the grassland sections. Summer is hotter and the flow thinner, but the shaded canopy keeps the trails comfortable earlier and later in the day. The mild, green winters may be the local secret season—cool, quiet, and the falls at full volume.
