What This Chart Shows

This interactive visualization displays Auburn's population growth from 1900 to 2020, with context from Placer County and California state populations. Each data point represents a census year or demographic estimate, accompanied by historical milestones that shaped the city's development.

Data Sources

Population figures are compiled from publicly available datasets maintained by:

  • U.S. Census Bureau decennial census records (1900–2020)
  • American Community Survey (ACS) 5-year estimates
  • California Department of Finance (CA DOF) demographic estimates
  • Placer County historical archives and records

All data represents the best available public records for each time period. This dataset will be updated as new census data becomes available.

Purpose

This resource is provided as a public service to help residents, researchers, and visitors understand Auburn's demographic evolution. For official city statistics and planning documents, please consult the City of Auburn's official website or contact the City Clerk's office.

Data Sources & Methodology

Technical details and accessibility approach

Data Collection & Validation

Population data is sourced from official government repositories and cross-referenced for accuracy. Historical data (1900–1950) comes from digitized census records; modern data (1960–2020) is drawn from Census Bureau APIs and California Department of Finance annual estimates. Where multiple sources exist for the same year, we prioritize decennial census figures as the authoritative source.

Visualization Methodology

This scrollytelling visualization follows civic data journalism best practices, inspired by organizations like The New York Times Graphics team and UnderstandingHouston.org. The design prioritizes:

  • Clarity: Clean visual hierarchy with minimal cognitive load
  • Context: County and state comparisons provide regional perspective
  • Narrative: Historical milestones connect data to lived experience
  • Transparency: All data sources cited with direct links where available

Accessibility Approach

This visualization is built to WCAG 2.1 Level AA standards and includes:

  • Keyboard Navigation: Full functionality via Tab, Enter, Space, and Arrow keys
  • Screen Reader Support: ARIA labels, live regions, and semantic HTML
  • Motion Sensitivity: Respects prefers-reduced-motion setting
  • Color Independence: Information conveyed through multiple visual cues, not color alone
  • Touch Targets: Minimum 44×44px tap areas on all interactive elements
  • Contrast Ratios: Text meets or exceeds 4.5:1 contrast requirement

Tested with NVDA, JAWS, VoiceOver, and keyboard-only navigation.

Data Updates & Maintenance

This dataset will be updated when new census data becomes available (typically every 10 years for decennial census, annually for ACS estimates). Historical data is considered stable and will only be revised if official corrections are published by source agencies.

For questions about this data or to report inaccuracies, please contact the Visit Auburn team or consult the original source agencies listed above.

Technical Implementation: Built with React, TypeScript, and Tailwind CSS. Visualization components are open-source and reusable for other municipalities. Chart rendering uses SVG with progressive enhancement for interactivity.

This data visualization follows government open data standards and civic technology best practices.
